Abstract

The critical dynamics of Iran’s international relations might potentially give way to a multi-level short-term escalation. From a possible tightening of today’s sanction-policies to armed conflict, numerous hypothetical outcomes are to be considered, concerning the ever worsening current crisis between Iran, on one side, and Europe and the U.S., on the other. Given its peculiar-and widely unknown-institutional, economic and social structure, Iran seems to be displaying a defying attitude, counting on temporary power factors and on peculiar and risky political necessities. To all of the above must be added the increasing unpredictability of Washington’s security policies, in terms of the fight against both terrorism and emerging threats, such as nuclear proliferation.
